Stena Germanica ferry - 13 June 2018

Geoff
An excellent camperstop at Wildeshausen and only €5. Before leaving, we took a walk, taking in the loos at the swimming pool and Aldi, where we bought three different German red wines to try.

Today, our second day of travelling to Sweden, has been uneventful. Around Bremen, the roadworks meant miles of roadworks and narrow lanes but the traffic was always moving so it wasn't a great problem. We stopped for lunch at a rest area (rastplatz).

An annoying issue with the camper from shortly after we left home on Monday was an engine diagnostic warning light on the dash which appeared but I was pretty sure it wasn't anything that would affect the running of the engine. Anyway, at some point today it went out.

It was motorway and dual carriageway all the way to Kiel, where we arrived around 3.30pm. Just as we reached the ferry terminal, Amanda reminded me that we had planned to refuel in Germany as the cost would be less than in Sweden, so we went on to the nearest filling station. We paid €1.21 a litre. According to research I did beforehand, we might have to pay €1.42 a litre in Sweden. Given that I put in 71 litres, I think we made a saving of about £11.00.

We queued at the ferry terminal for over two hours. We were there early but didn't board till close to 6pm. It seemed that a number of vehicles had been ordered to go into incorrect lanes so the port employees rather chaotically got them to change into other lanes. Still, it passed the time. Eventually we boarded and have a lovely outside cabin. We left port a little after 6.30pm and should reach Gothenburg at about 9.15am in the morning. It should be a calm journey.

A good night and we are both feeling much refreshed. Excellent camperstop. The British couple next door were just returning from a trip similar to our planned one. This morning's legstretch took us to Aldi and a purchase of some German red wine, and we were away soon after 11. Very little to report today other than a straightforward drive to Kiel to catch the overnight ferry to Gothenburg. I am writing this in the queue to board where we have been for nearly 2 hours. The port marshalls have been entertaining themselves by directing vehicles between lanes in a semi random fashion and there are now not many vehicles left! Including us!
