Wildeshausen, near Bremen - Tuesday, 12 June 2018

Geoff
Leaving the UK from Harwich yesterday, we had a super calm crossing and left the ferry around 8am. For some reason, the satnav sent us through the centre of Hook of Holland, rather than the all routes road around the edge of town. Anyway, we were soon on our way. The roads were busy all the way across The Netherlands and into Germany. There were countless lorries, often in unintentional clusters. We stopped for lunch and a couple of shorter stops, all in aires.

Basically, we headed for Osnabrück and then set the satnav for Bremen. We were going for a camperstop just past Bremen but the traffic information on the satnav announced various delays so at around 4pm we left the A1 and drove the short distance into the village of Wildeshausen where there is a pleasant wooded camperstop with room for twenty units. It's about three quarters full. The only facility missing is a loo but there is a swimming pool close by and we've used the loo there. Fortunately, the pool opens in the morning at 6.30 although we're not planning an early start. We have about 140 miles to travel to the ferry at Kiel tomorrow. It's nice to get the first day of driving done.

We have decided that today, our first day in Europe will count as day 1 proper. Travelling to Harwich yesterday was trouble free, even though, or perhaps because, we left much later than intended. With time short we were forced to take a chance on the M25, but all was well, and we arrived and checked in in good order, with time to  eat our delayed supper quickly before boarding just after 10 pm. Straight to bed, and Geoff was asleep before we left port just after 11. Always an ominous sign, that, and sure enough he was awake and up shaving at 5 am UK time! (6 European time of course) So what with that disturbance, little sleep myself despite a very calm crossing, and an inescapable wake up call at 6.30 (accompanied by the sound of tweeting birds!) I am a little fragile today. We are both pretty tired, but very pleased to be on our way. After what seems like a full day of motorway travelling - on the road including stops from 9 to 4 - we are settled for the night a little short of Bremen, in a Camperstop close to the town of Wildeshausen, with various sports and social facilities dotted around in the surrounding woods, and some very pleasant woodland walks. It is now 7.30 and we are wondering how early we can sensibly go to bed.

  1. Happy travels!

You've already made it further in a day than we've travelled in just over a week, although we will make it to Germany by the end of the week.
