Atlanthavsveien Sjøstuer Camping, Kårvåg - 3 July 2018

Geoff
We were away by 8am in order to avoid parking charges which operate from then. A slightly disturbed night. Our on board water pump has always been temperamental, despite being given the all clear when we have a habitation check done, it stopped working just after we left home (the same thing happened in 2016). I'm able to access water from the tank via the drain tap so it's not a big deal. Anyway, in the early hours, we were awoken by the sound of the water pump working and a light flashing. Now it's back to it's usual state of not working.

We stopped at a Rema 1000 supermarket after we'd got outside Trondheim as we've ascertained that they are handy for a loo and free wifi.

Nearby, we found a place to empty the camper loo. On driving away we had a slight mishap. I couldn't drive forward so had to reverse a bit. In then going forward, I failed to see the grey water drain and the offside front wheel dropped about six inches into it. I was able to reverse back out with no harm done to the camper or the drain so it could have been worse.

The E6 road south from Trondheim was quite slow as there are extensive road building works under way. Subsequently, we joined the E39 which was much better and there followed some beautiful countryside with the road usually either alongside or within view of a fjord.

We boarded a ferry at Halsa for a half hour crossing to then rejoin the E39. A few tunnels followed, including one 5.6km out of Kristiansund. The road emerged into a totally different landscape, a wide vista of smooth rock outcrops.

We are overnighting at a lovely waterside site just before the start of the Atlantic Road, an 8km scenic route which island hops. Here's hoping for good weather tomorrow.

We were away in good time, and drove along the lovely E39 for most of the day, taking in several breaks and one ferry along the way. Stops were for:- loos and Wi-fi at the first supermarket we came across - Rema 1000, noted for future reference - as well as stocking up on fruit, plus a treat of cold chicken and potato salad for tonight's supper; a motorhomes service point at a garage; breakfast; a snooze for the driver; lunch; another shopping stop because we forgot afternoon cake.

Kristiansund seems to exist around its oil industry, and any attractive bits are not visible from the main thoroughfare. We did have a look at a campsite mentioned in Lonely Planet, but decided to move on, along the 64 route, known as the Atlanterhavsveien, although really it seems that label refers to an 8km stretch of it made up of a series of bridges connecting islands which has been called the worlds best road trip. That is almost certainly an exaggeration.

But that is for tomorrow. For tonight we are settled in a lovely little site with places just for motorhomes, and a few cabins, somewhere on the coast of the island of Averøy. It is very attractive, with sea views on all sides, and would be very peaceful if the people in the next door van were not enthusiastic football fans.
